Midmar Fishery is a bank fishery (No wading) and the vast majority of the water can be covered with lighter tackle. No need for heavyweight rods so there is no need to bring your grandpa’s old double hander! A #6 should do perfectly well but you could go lighter or heavier. Floating lines tend to be the favourite line but we do have fishers using sinking lines from time to time.
The best fly patterns (in our humble opinion) are natural patterns; Buzzers, Diawl Bach, Daddies, and Pheasant Tail Nymphs all feature in our catch book. Mostly in darker colours. That’s not to say that the odd shiny bit of fluff won’t work. Our fish can be fussy so it’s worth thinking about the time and year and conditions when choosing.
Oh…and bring a jacket! when it rains here it REALLY rains.
